Minister of Environment Reviews Egypt’s Endeavors to Expand the Use of Renewable Energy at EGYPES 2025

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad gave a presentation about the Egyptian efforts to expand the use of renewable energy through a session entitled “Balancing the Energy Trilemma: Navigating Sustainability, Security, and Affordability”, which was held during the Sustainability in Energy Conference as part of Egypt Energy Show Conference and Exhibition (EGYPES 2025).

The conference was attended by the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi; Philip Whittaker, the Executive Vice President of Business Services at Harbour Energy, and other CEOs of energy companies.

During her speech, Fouad explained how the use of renewable energy was challenge for the developing countries, ten years ago, in the light of the lack of needed technologies in these countries. She also discussed the role of the investment and financing as well as the international development banks assuming the task of reducing the risks of investing in renewable energy for the private sector in reducing the costs of renewable energy.

She highlighted the challenge of reducing the cost of renewable energy for developing countries in a way that does not cause more burdens and debts on them, in light of their efforts to achieve their commitments in the climate agreement.

The Minister added that developing countries are being punished for fulfilling their climate commitments by having to bear the burden of debt to achieve the sustainable development goal of access to energy and renewable energy of all kinds and to achieve a balance between sustainability, security, and affordability, providing several tips to lift the burden on these countries.

Additionally, Fouad reviewed Egypt’s experience in transforming the challenge of expanding renewable energy into a real opportunity, which reflects the state’s vision of achieving its climate commitments while achieving development at the same time.

“On the 31st of December in 2024, we submitted our first transparency report to the climate secretariat. For the oil and gas sector, we have achieved a 57% [emissions] reduction through the flaring reduction technology and reusing that once again in the energy production in the same sector,” the Minister of Environment mentioned.
