Iran to Store Gas in Azerbaijan

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic’s (SOCAR) President, Rovnag Abdullayev, said that Iran is considering pumping natural gas to SOCAR’s facilities during the summer months, for storage purposes until  it is resupplied to Iran’s northern provinces in winter, reported Press TV.

Azerbaijan has two gas storage facilities, including Garadagh and Galmaz.  Abdullayev noted: “capacity of gas storage facilities has been increased from 800mcm to 3.5bcm for energy security purposes. We can make the capacity over 5bcm.” However, he pointed out that a preliminary check over this increase in storage space is necessary. SOCAR has requested Iran to provide it with the required supplies to conduct the needed tests, according to News.Az.

In August, Iran’s Deputy Petroleum Minister for International Affairs, Amir-Hossein Zamaniniya, said that Tehran is considering this agreement as a counter measure to the difficulties it faces in supplying gas to it’s northern regions during winter, and that pumping will start with Azerbaijan’s underground storage facilities in the near future.
