MEDITERRANEAN SEA, ISRAEL – FEBRUARY 2013: In this handout image provided by Albatross, The Tamar drilling natural gas production platform is seen some 25 kilometers West of the Ashkelon shore in February 2013 in Israel. The offshore Tamar drilling site which was originally dispatched from a shipyard in Texas at the end of last year is due to start producing natural gas next week. Over the past few years Israel has suffered from a shortage in natural gas, but with the new platform that weighs 34,000 tons and will be mainly operated by Israelis, the US company Nobel Energy which owns a 36% stake in Tamar, hopes to change Israel’s energy situation as well as the economy as a whole. The Egypt Upstream Gateway (EUG) has given an overview of the West El King Block, one of the 14 oil and gas exploration blocks included in Egypt’s 2026 international bid round launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) in August, on its LinkedIn page.

The 2026 bid round, includes eight blocks offered by the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) across the Mediterranean Sea, Nile Delta, and North Sinai, alongside six blocks offered by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) in the Gulf of Suez, Sinai, and Western Desert.

According to EUG, the West El King Block is located offshore in the Mediterranean Sea, around 70 kilometers (km²) north of El Dabaa City. The block covers an area of 2,523 square kilometers ((km²), with water depths ranging from 1,675 meters (m) to 2,675 meters (m).

EUG’s technical overview shows that the area has 1,797 square kilometers (km²)of 3D seismic coverage and 1,835 kilometers of 2D seismic data. The block also has two wells listed in its exploration history.

The West El King offering comes as Egypt seeks to attract additional investment into exploration and accelerate the development of discoveries. When announcing the 2026 bid round, MoPMR said several offered blocks are near existing fields and infrastructure, including pipeline networks, processing plants, and export facilities, which can reduce development costs and speed up bringing discoveries on stream.
