Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla has held talks with Jane Toogood, the UK’s First Hydrogen Champion and the Chief Executive of Catalyst Technologies at Johnson Matthey to discuss Egyptian efforts in hydrogen and the important outcomes of Decarbonization Day during COP27.
This came on the sidelines of the British Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) event in London. During the talks, El Molla noted that the Egyptian petroleum sector is working according an integrated strategy for reducing carbon from its activities through six pillars, including low-carbon hydrogen.
Additionally, the minister shed light on the important outcomes of Decarbonization Day, organized by the petroleum sector on the sidelines of COP27 summit as a platform for the global energy industry. Decarbonization Day was a core activity that focused on the efforts and commitments to meet the growing demand of energy as well as reduce emissions gradually.
El Molla emphasized the role of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) in pushing the hydrogen economy forward, adapting with Egypt’s vision to become pioneer in this essential field. He added also that Egypt studies the optimum exploitation of all hydrogen resources, pointing out that hydrogen prices will be more competitive in the future due to the growing demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives, especially in Europe.
El Molla showcased the latest hydrogen agreements which was conducted with Scatec to develop the first green methanol production in Egypt by using carbon dioxide. During the meeting, the parties discussed the available opportunities to explore technologies offered by Johnson Matthey for green methanol production as well as low carbon hydrogen production from natural gas.
