Egyptian PM Reviews Progress of MIDOR Refinery Expansion

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting to follow up on the status of the MIDOR refinery expansion project in Alexandria, as well as efforts to provide various petroleum products.

The meeting was attended by Hassan Abdullah, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE); Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Mohamed Maait, Minister of Finance; Ahmed Kouchouk, Vice Minister of Finance for Fiscal Policies; and a number of officials in the two ministries.

The Prime Minister pointed out the importance of the projects being implemented in the petroleum sector, given their role in increasing the volume of local production of petroleum products.

During the meeting, El Molla indicated that one of the most important projects currently being implemented, which will be fully operational soon, is the Midor refinery expansion project in Alexandria.

El Molla noted that this project aims to maximize the production of petroleum products, by increasing the current refining capacity from 100,000 to 160,000 barrels per day by adding five new units and expanding some existing units.

The minister added that the various stages of the project, whose investment cost reaches $2.7 billion, have been trialed, and it is planned to begin full operation by next March.

El Molla highlighted that the project’s production capacity is scheduled to reach 1.3 million tons of diesel, 600,000 tons of high-octane benzene, 700,000 tons of jet fuel, 226,000 tons of coal, 145,000 tons of butane, and 65,000 tons of sulfur.
