Egypt to Generate Electricity from Water Plants

The Egyptian electricity sector is taking steps to establish first power plant in the Middle East to generate electricity from water stations using pumping and storage technology, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, stated, adding that the new plant will have 2400 MW capacity and will be located in Attaqa Mountain, Amwal Al Ghad reports.

The new plant will be implemented in cooperation with China’s Sinohydro Corporation, in order for Egypt to benefit from energy produced from new and renewable sources and to be able to store this energy to be used when needed.

The Egyptian electricity sector is adopting promising plans during FY 2016/2017 until FY 2018/2019, with initial investments estimated at EGP 18 billion, in order to develop the electricity transmission and distribution grid as the sector is establishing a new grid parallel to the existing one, Shaker pointed out during a workshop held to encourage the exchange usage of electricity generated from solar sources.
