An official at the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation informed Egypt Oil&Gas that Egypt needs around 2m tons of fuel annually in order to fill the gap between supply and demand. He added that EGPC is keen to import huge amounts of benzene and diesel in order to cover citizens’ demands in the filling stations across the governorates.
The official stated that importing the mentioned amounts will assist in filling the gap between the local production and the consumption until the refineries’ development programs start to add 8m tons of petroleum derivatives; which represents 60% of the local production. He ensured that EGPC is continuously launching tenders to import fuel in order to solve energy crisis until 2019.
EGPC is seeking to monthly import 300,000 tons of butane, 70,000 tons of benzene and diesel, and 50,000 tons of mazut in order to meet the local market’s needs.
The official explained that EGPC have set a plan for May 2017 that will include building up reserves for fuel enough for 30 days and 40m butane bottles.
