Egypt: Petrochemical industry overcomes global crisis

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmy said the Egyptian petrochemical industry has quickly ridden out the fallout from the global financial crisis.

Fahmy said the petrochemical industry is one of the strategic industries which provide more job opportunities.

The Egyptian official was presiding Saturday 4/9/2010 over a meeting of the general assemblies of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Company, Alexandria Petroleum, Ameriya Oil Refining Co. and Petrogas.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Electricity Hassan Younis and Minister of Local Development Abdel-Salam el-Mahgoub.

Meanwhile, first under-secretary of the Petroleum Ministry for Gas Affairs Tareq el-Hadidi said there are no plans whatsoever to import natural gas from abroad.

In statements on Saturday 4/9/2010, Hadidi said the ministry of trade and industry has initiated a proposal calling for boosting cement industry by establishing 12 new cement factories.

The factories are built by foreign investments, he said, adding that measures were taken to start building as many as 15 cement factories during 2008/2009.
