Egypt, Lebanon Sign MoU to Supply Gas to Deir Ammar Power Plant

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water to supply natural gas to the Deir Ammar Power Plant in Lebanon for electricity generation.

The agreement, signed during a visit by Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, aims to deepen bilateral relations and utilize Egypt’s infrastructure to bolster regional energy security, according to a statement by MoPMR.

Under the terms of the strategic cooperation, Egypt will leverage its robust production and export infrastructure, including the Idku and Damietta liquefaction plants. This year, Egypt has exported approximately 150,000–155,000 cubic meters (m³) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Greece, Italy, and Türkiye.

Furthermore, the recent leasing of the Energos Force Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU), docked at Jordan’s Port of Aqaba, facilitates the transport of natural gas via the Arab Gas Pipeline to meet Lebanon’s rising electricity requirements.

During the visit, Badawi met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who described the MoU as a fundamental step toward increasing electricity production for Lebanese citizens.

Aoun emphasized that the partnership represents a practical solution to Lebanon’s natural gas requirements. Badawi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s stability and prosperity through technical expertise and energy integration.

In a separate meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, both officials confirmed the historical ties between the two nations, particularly within the energy sector.

Badawi noted that joint working groups will move swiftly to achieve the objectives of the MoU, stressing that Egypt is fully prepared to share its specialized expertise in the oil and natural gas industry to support Lebanon’s development goals.

The natural gas supply agreement builds upon a broader framework of cooperation established during the 10th Session of the Egyptian-Lebanese Joint Higher Committee held in Cairo in November 2025. During those sessions, both nations signed a series of 15 strategic accords covering technical expertise exchange in petroleum exploration, refined product trade, and administrative coordination in taxation and customs.
