Egypt, Greece Discuss Joint Energy Projects, Natural Gas Exports to Europe

Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, held a meeting with Vassilis Kikilias, Greece’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, to explore ways to strengthen cooperation and partnership between Egypt and Greece in the energy sector and gas transportation infrastructure to Europe, as well as knowledge and expertise exchange.

During the meeting, both sides highlighted significant opportunities to launch joint projects in gas infrastructure, leveraging Egypt’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities, Greek reception and regasification terminals (FSRU), and connecting gas pipelines to Greece’s vertical corridor for transporting gas to European markets. The discussion also covered the possibility of creating joint ventures and strategic partnerships between Egyptian and Greek companies to optimize and expand existing infrastructure, supporting energy exports to Europe.

Minister Badawi emphasized the importance of Egyptian-Greek collaboration in the energy sector. He noted the pivotal role that bilateral integration could play in transporting gas to Europe through regional corridors. The minister also stressed the importance of cooperation in reducing carbon emissions, adopting modern technologies, and applying artificial intelligence in the energy sector, in line with United Nations and European Union clean energy objectives.

On the exploration front, Minister Badawi noted Egypt’s current intensive activity, which strengthens partnerships and supports attracting Greek companies to participate in exploration, production, and gas transport projects.

For his part, Vassilis Kikilias praised Egypt’s expansion of maritime infrastructure projects, describing them as a “positive step that would attract more investment to the country and bolster Egyptian-Greek cooperation in the energy sector”. He stressed Greece’s support for increased investment and collaboration with Egypt, particularly in natural gas, green energy, and petrochemicals.

Both sides agreed that working groups would be established to study ways to strengthen the partnership, ensuring objectives related to energy security, regional integration, environmental sustainability, and investment opportunities are met.
