EDF Renewables and Elsewedy Electric Group have commissioned two solar power plants in Aswan’s Benban solar power park, with a total installed capacity of 130 megawatt peak (MWp) (65 MWp per each plant), according to an official statement disclosed by EDF on October 14, 2019.
The statement revealed that these projects, jointly owned by the partners, hold a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), highlighting that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Proparco financed the above-mentioned projects.
EDF pointed out that this additional solar capacity represents a step towards the Egyptian government’s objective of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020, clarifying that both projects were developed as part of the second phase of the national electricity feed-in tariff programs, which had been launched by the Egyptian government.
