UK supermajor BP has made a 15th find – the Portia subsalt oil discovery – at Block 31, in Angola’s ultra deep-water play.
BP said the Portia find lies about 7 kilometres north of the Titania discovery and about 10.5 km south-west of the Plutao field.
Portia was drilled in a water depth of 2012 metres and reached a total depth of 5678 metres.
BP added that Portia is the fourth discovery in Block 31 where the exploration well has been drilled through salt to access the oil-bearing sandstone reservoir beneath.
The well test results confirmed the capacity of the reservoir to flow at rates of more than 5000 barrels per day under production conditions.
Sonangol is the concessionaire of Block 31 and has a 20% interest. BP operates the block with a 26.67% stake.
The other partners are ExxonMobil (25%), StatoilHydro (13.33%), Marathon (10%) and Total subsidiary Tepa (5%).
