Badawi Highlights Remarkable Role of Sukari Gold Mine

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi visited the Sukari gold mine, emphasizing its importance as a model for advanced mining investment. He underscored the government’s full commitment to supporting the mine’s achievements, particularly through the use of new exploration technologies aimed at increasing production.

Badawi highlighted the efforts of the mineral sector to create success stories and attract more investments in the mining industry. He noted that these efforts, combined with the contributions of partners who have won recent bids, enrich the sector with diverse expertise and technologies, thereby doubling its revenues and impact.

During the visit, the minister was briefed on the mine’s development and investments, including its management, applied technologies, safe operational practices, and commitment to equitable operations. He also learned about the social responsibility projects undertaken in nearby communities, including initiatives to empower women.

Badawi engaged with the mine’s employees, praising their understanding of the industry’s significance and the importance of adhering to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. He commended the presence of women in the workforce and their strong performance within the operational system.

Martin Horgan, CEO of Centamin, stated that the company is focused on enhancing the added value of production from the Sukari mine, which holds a significant global reserve. He praised the high performance of the mine, driven by a qualified, trained, and diverse workforce, including women who play a crucial role in its successes. Horgan expressed confidence in Egypt’s potential and the value of Centamin’s partnership with the country, viewing the mine as a catalyst for further successes in the mining sector.

Mohamed Mahmoud, Chairman of Sukari Gold Production Company, explained that the mine, located about 30 km from Marsa Alam, began producing gold in 2010. He highlighted that the concession area, covering 160 square kilometers around Sukari Mountain, exemplifies what the mining sector can achieve with modern technologies, diverse expertise, and strategic investments, contributing significantly to the national economy.
