Badawi, Chevron Advance Talks on Aphrodite Gas Pipeline

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, met with Basil Allam, Country Manager of Chevron Cyprus, via video conference to coordinate the executive steps for connecting the Cypriot Aphrodite gas field to Egypt’s infrastructure. The project aims to facilitate the transport of gas to Egyptian liquefaction plants for eventual re-export to international markets.

Badawi stressed the importance of the project in strengthening Egypt’s role as a regional hub for gas trading and distribution, and maximizing the utilization of its infrastructure, according to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR).

He highlighted the need for joint teamwork and unified efforts during the current phase among all parties to accelerate procedures and implementation steps for the project, ensuring mutual benefits.

During the meeting, participants reviewed the progress made in preparing the main project agreements by the technical and legal teams. They agreed to intensify efforts and continue holding meetings in the coming period to complete the necessary procedures and finalize the agreements as soon as possible.

The meeting follows earlier discussions held in Washington in early February between Badawi and senior Chevron executives in the US, which resulted in a roadmap to accelerate technical and commercial negotiations.

The Aphrodite gas field was discovered in 2011 in Block 12 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and is operated by Chevron in partnership with Shell and NewMed Energy.

In April, Chevron began seabed survey operations as part of preparations for constructing a pipeline linking the field to Egypt. The project builds on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Egypt, Cyprus, and Chevron during the EGYPES 2025 conference in Cairo, which laid the foundation for the commercial development and utilization of gas from the Aphrodite field.
