A 3 billion cubic meter liquefied natural gas shipment from Sonatrach natural gas Algerian company will arrive in Egypt by next week via Ain Sokhna port, Khalid Abdul Badi Chairman of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) told Youm7.

Badi added that after Sonatrach’s shipment, the total shipments from Algeria will reach 3 at a total value of 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas pumped to the EGAS, to meet the growing needs of power within the high temperatures of summer.

The first shipment was of 3.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas and arrived Ain Sokhna port in early April, and the second shipment was of 3 billion cubic meters from Nobel Clean on May 3.

In November 2014, 16 agreements were signed between Egypt and Algeria to create mixed contracting companies, natural gas and oil exploration, and other services, during a visit to Cairo by Algerian Prime Minister Abdel Malek Salal on Nov. 13 amid progressing relations between the North African countries.

Among other affected industrial sectors, Egypt’s energy crisis has manifested itself in the past few years in major power cuts, especially in the summer. While the majority of Egyptian households use LPG cylinders rather than natural gas, Egypt imports and subsidizes the majority of its LPG needs. However, the government plans to supply 1.5 million homes in poor areas with natural gas through an approved World Bank soft loan of $500 million in the next few years.
