Algeria has launched a new oil and natural gas licensing round, offering seven exploration blocks in a bid to bolster hydrocarbon output and attract foreign investment, Reuters reported.
The round, branded “Algeria Bid Round 2026,” was unveiled during a ceremony in Algiers attended by representatives of international energy companies, marking the country’s latest push to strengthen its upstream sector.
The offered blocks are located across Ouargla, Illizi, Touggourt, and El Bayadh, covering a mix of oil and gas prospects. Officials estimate the areas could hold hundreds of millions of barrels (mmbbl) of oil alongside significant volumes of natural gas.
Bidding will formally open on June 1, when companies will gain access to tender documents and online presentations. This will be followed by data review sessions and clarification periods running through October 31. Final bid submissions are due by November 26.
Hydrocarbon contracts are expected to be signed with state-owned Sonatrach on January 31 next year, under either production-sharing or participation agreements, depending on the block.
Algeria has been working to revitalize its upstream sector as part of broader efforts to maintain its position in global energy markets and secure long-term investment.
Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab said the new bidding round would help strengthen global energy security and reinforce Algeria’s role as a regional energy hub.
