500 Meter Oil Spill in Red Sea

An oil spillage of about 500 meters in circumference has been spotted Saturday in the Red Sea’s northernmost city of Ras Gharib, Youm7 reported.

Head of the Environment Protection Association Hassan Farag, said in a press release that the association has notified Red Sea protectorates department about the leak, which extends from the Nassr Club’s beach to its cornice, Youm7 reported Saturday.

As a consequence, the Ministry of Environment ordered to form a committee to investigate the incident, stand on the reasons of the leak and determine its source.

In April, a 500-ton Nile carrier ship with a load of phosphate sank in Qena after crashing into a pillar on the Dandara Bridge.

A dispute around the effect of phosphate on the public health heightened at that time; examined samples of the water showed the Nile water was not affected by the phosphate, which experts said is a sedimentary material with no adverse effect on drinking water.
