Badawi: Egypt to Drill 480 New Exploration Wells through 2030

Egypt plans to drill around 480 new oil and gas exploration wells over the next five years with total investments exceeding $5.7 billion, announced Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, during his keynote speech at the World Energies Summit held in London. He explained that 101 wells are scheduled for drilling in 2026 alone, distributed across Egypt’s main petroleum regions, 67 wells in the Western Desert, 14 in the Mediterranean, 9 in the Gulf of Suez, and 6 in the Nile Delta, contributing directly to increasing domestic production.

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, on the sidelines of the Energy Intelligence Forum 2025 in London to discuss strengthening technological collaboration aimed at increasing oil and gas production and reducing carbon emissions.

Egypt Exports LNG to Italy from Idku Liquefication Plant

Egypt has exported  155,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its liquefaction plant in Idku to Italy. The exported gas was carried onboard the New NATURE tanker operated by Shell Interrnational. 

The shipment, according to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), comes within the framework of the Ministry’s strategy to encourage international partners to increase investments necessary to bolster gas exploration and domestic production.  This strategy said the ministry has led to accelerating the development of phases 10 and 11 of the West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) project-co-operated and partly owned by Shell, -in the Mediterranean Sea, to boost natural gas output dedicated for export.

bp Uses Valaris Deepwater Rig to Drill 5 New Gas Wells Offshore the Mediterranean

bp has signed a contract with Valaris, an American offshore drilling contractor, to drill five new natural gas wells in its Mediterranean concession areas at a depth of 300-1500 meters, utilizing the Valaris DS-12 deepwater drilling rig. The agreement marks the next phase of bp’s new drilling program in Egypt. This follows a preliminary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in September with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) in London to implement the program.

Commenting on the move, Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, stated that bp’s recent gas  projects in the Mediterranean were pivotal for boosting domestic gas production and securing new resources during peak summer consumption. He emphasized the government’s full support to accelerate bp’s new projects, with the goal to increase local gas output over the next year, while discovering new gas reservoirs to enhance Egypt’s production capacity and reduce import needs.

El-Sisi,CNCEC Discuss Soda Ash Project for Industrial Self-Sufficiency

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed the importance of Egypt's Soda Ash project for supporting self-sufficiency in local industries and reducing imports. Led by Taiwan’s TCC Group, a subsidiary of China National Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNCEC), in partnership with Egyptian entities, the project will be Egypt's first integrated soda ash production complex, providing vital raw material for glass, detergents, paper, and fertilizer manufacturing–sectors that are currently almost entirely reliant on imports.

El-Sisi made his statement during a meeting with Mo Dingge, Chairman of CNCEC, in the presence of Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly: Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Wu Xiang gong, the Vice Chairman of the CNCEC Group and Chairman of TCC Company, in addition to Guo Guihe, CEO of TCC.

Sawiris, Petroleum Minister Discuss Boosting Gold Exploration

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi held a meeting with Naguib Sawiris, Chairman of In2metals Holding Company and Orascom Investment Holding, to discuss means of boosting cooperation in the mining sector. The Sawiris family fully owns In2Metals, which is incorporated in Luxembourg and focuses on gold and copper exploration. The company holds an 80.1 per cent stake in Akh Gold, KH Gold, a gold exploration company focused on discovering gold deposits in Egypt's Eastern Desert.

Egypt, Cyprus Partnership Expands to Mining

Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, met with Cyprus’s Ambassador to Egypt, Polly Ioannou, at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to discuss prospects for cooperation between the two countries in the mining sector. Ambassador Ioannou revealed that several Cyprus-based mining companies have shown strong interest in investing in Egypt’s mining sector, praising the notable progress the industry has achieved. She said that recent reforms have created a more investment-friendly environment, making Egypt an increasingly attractive destination for foreign investors.
