UAE’s AMEA to Establish Africa’s Largest Solar, Battery storage project in Egypt

The UAE-based AMEA Power, one of the fastest-growing renewable energy companies in the regionannounced it will be building a solar panel and a battery storage project in Aswan. strengthen the resilience of Egypt’s power system while advancing the country’s clean energy transition, according to an AMEA press release

The project, described as Africa’s largest single-site renewable energy and battery storage facility, will be established through a partnership between AMEA Power, which owns 60%, and Japan’s Kyuden International Corporation, which will hold the reamining 40%. The  International Finance Corporation (IFC) will finance the project through a $570 million senior debt package in addition to concessional funding.

The project integrates a 1,000 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS)  with a total cost exceeding $700 million. Once operational- in June 2026- it is expected to generate over 3 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power more than 500,000 households and offset 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

The construction process will create over 4,000 jobs, with more than 95% filled by Egyptians, supporting local economic growth in Upper Egypt. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, said the project marks a defining step in Egypt’s clean energy journey, enhancing energy security and long-term development.

AMEA Power has established a strong track record in Egypt through its partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), delivering key renewable energy projects that enhance the country’s power infrastructure. These include the 500 MW Abydos Solar PV Plant in Aswan’s Kom Ombo area, commissioned in December 2024 to supply clean electricity to around 300,000 households annually.

The company also completed the 500 MW Amunet Wind Power Plant in  Ras Ghareb ahead of schedule in June 2025, marking Africa’s largest operational wind farm with yearly output exceeding 2,500 GWh.

Additionally, AMEA Power launched Egypt’s first utility-scale 300 MWh battery energy storage system in July 2025 as an extension of the Abydos project, bolstering grid resilience. This new solar-plus-storage initiative in Aswan builds directly on these successes, reinforcing AMEA Power’s role in Egypt’s clean energy expansion, and it also marks Kyuden International Corporation’s first investment in Egypt.
