The governments of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have announced a new oil discovery by Wafra Joint Operations (WJO) in the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field, situated five kilometers north of the Wafra field, according to Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The Wara reservoir at the North Wafra (Wara-Burgan-1) well is producing crude oil at a rate of over 500 barrels per day (bbl/d), with an American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity ranging from 26 to 27 degrees.
This is the first oil discovery since production operations resumed in the partitioned zone and its adjacent offshore area in mid-2020. The find is considered highly significant, as it bolsters both countries’ reputations as dependable global energy suppliers and demonstrates their continued strength in exploration and production.
The Wafra oil field is a significant hydrocarbon asset located within the partitioned (neutral) zone shared by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The field extends roughly 30 miles inland, with oil transported via pipelines to processing and export terminals at Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
