Electricity-generating stations in Egypt account for almost 65% of the country’s total natural gas consumption, an official source at the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) told Amwal Al Ghad.
Power plants are followed by households and factories, the source added, noting that Egypt is expanding the use of alternative energy sources like solar and wind, which will directly reduce the use of conventional fuels in electricity generation.
By 2022, Egypt will decrease natural gas dependency in electricity generation to around 45%, as the country has a plan to produce around 20% of electricity from renewable resources. This will allow Egypt to direct natural gas to other industries and increase value added
Egypt currently produces over 6.5 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) of natural gas.
