Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Sameh Elhefny‏, Minister of Civil Aviation, to follow up on the cooperation between the two ministries on securing jet fuel as well as developments related to Egypt’s plan to start producing  Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The discussions mainly focused on progress regarding Egypt’s first SAF project, alongside securing local energy infrastructure to meet rising transport demands, according to a statement by the Cabinet. The project is being developed in Alexandria by the Egyptian Sustainable Aviation Fuel Company (ESAF), a newly established subsidiary of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM). The facility will utilize Honeywell technology to convert locally available used cooking oil into 120,000 tons of sustainable jet fuel annually, a move projected to cut aviation carbon emissions by 400,000 tons per year.

The two ministers stressed that efforts are being made to ensure the demand for jet fuel is met efficiently and consistently, particularly during the Hajj and Umrah seasons and peak tourism periods, which witness the highest levels of travel activity and fuel demand.

Badawi stated that the ministry is keen on developing and enhancing the efficiency of aircraft fueling stations at Egyptian airports, operated by national petroleum sector companies and international firms, in accordance with the latest internationally approved systems and standards. He affirmed that Egyptian refineries fully cover the domestic demand for jet fuel, highlighting the sector’s ability to boost productivity and accommodate rising demand during peak seasons.
