Iran’s NIOC Injects Nanofluid in Sourmeh Resevoire for Oil Recovery

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has begun nanofluid injection into the Sourmeh reservoir of Bilal Oilfield, as an operational step targeting the implementation of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in the field, according to NIOC’s press release.

A relevant virtual meeting was held by the Iranian Offshore Oil Company in the presence of the director of research and technology of NIOC and the director of the Petroleum Industry Research Institute with Bilal oil platform. During the meeting, it was stated that the goal is to inject 18,000 barrels of nanofluids in the field’s well No. 10.

To examine the feasibility of injecting nanofluids as one of the new methods to boost the oil recovery factor, the technical savvy of producing suitable nanostructures (nanoemulsions) has been acquired to facilitate oil extraction.

It should be noted that, the project led by NIOC’s Research and Technology Management and the Iranian Offshore Oil Company as its employer, was on the Petroleum Industry Research Institute’s agenda since 2015 and now it is at the pilot stage.
