The New Valley Mineral Resources and Oil Company (Wadico), an Egyptian mining firm, has signed a 15‑year agreement with the China-based global energy company Huawei to expand solar energy use across its mining sites.
The deal was signed by Reda Selim, Chairman and Managing Director of Wadico, and Tony Bu, CEO of Huawei Egypt’s Digital Power Business, on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum (EMF) held in the New Capital on 28–29 September.
Under the agreement, Huawei will develop a 3.2‑megawatt (MW) solar power station with battery storage to ensure round‑the‑clock supply for Wadico’s operations. The $3.5 million project, to be developed at Al‑Shagab and East Sebaiya, is expected to cut carbon emissions by about 3,700 tons annually. Wadico currently operates seven mining sites and aims to gradually convert them to run on solar energy.
Selim told Egypt Oil and Gas (EOG) that Huawei’s integrated system will store daytime solar output for use at night, enabling continuous mining operations while reducing reliance on conventional power sources
“This is the first cooperation with Huawei, and the two sides are also working on potential projects at additional sites using the same technology,” he added.
