EU Opposes US Threat to Halt Diesel Exports Over Fuel Stocks

The European Union (EU) has opposed a US threat to suspend diesel exports to the bloc unless European countries release additional fuel from their reserves, warning that such a move could undermine energy cooperation between the two sides.

European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said that the EU “fully” opposes the threat, stressing that a diesel export ban would not benefit either side.

“A ban would not be beneficial to anyone,” Itkonen said, adding that the measure could undermine the EU’s trust in the US as a reliable energy partner.

The EU’s Oil Coordination Group is scheduled to meet on October 15 to discuss developments in oil and fuel markets, although the meeting could be brought forward if necessary.

The US position follows President Donald Trump’s support for restricting diesel exports to keep more fuel in the domestic market and curb rising energy costs.

Trump said the US should retain more of its diesel supplies, pointing to the country’s large production volumes.

The potential export restrictions come as global diesel markets face tighter supplies, with conflicts in Iran and Ukraine disrupting exports from major producers, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Elevated fuel prices have also increased pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the November 3 elections, adding to concerns over the impact of energy costs on consumers and the broader economy.
