The electricity sector plans to increase the number of prepaid electric meters to reach 10 million meters by mid-2020, according to a source in the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Amwal Al-Ghad reported.

The source added that the sector aims to add about 1.5 million meters across Egypt by H2 2019.

The sector has installed around 7.6 million meters since the ministry started the installation process in 2016 until April 2019.

The ministry managed to install 2.5 million meters in 2016, then increased the pace to reach 4.7 million meters in 2017. In 2018, the numbers of installed meters hit 6.9 million.

The new technology benefits consumers as they get to determine the amount to use and be charged for, as well as the government to monitor the excessive energy consumption.
