Ahmed Rostom, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, met with Namrata Thapar, World Bank Group Global Director for Metals and Minerals, to outline an integrated framework for advancing Egypt’s mining industry. Developed in collaboration with the World Bank (WB), the roadmap focuses on scaling up mineral development and elevating the sector’s overall GDP footprint, according to a statement by the Cabinet.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation to develop Egypt’s mining sector, attract private investment, and increase the value generated from the country’s mineral resources.
Rostom said Egypt is adopting policies to enable the private sector to exploit untapped natural resources, attract domestic and foreign investment, increase the added value of minerals, and create jobs as part of broader sustainable economic development efforts.
Thapar highlighted what she described as structural reforms undertaken by the Egyptian government to develop the mining sector. She said the World Bank is looking to deepen cooperation through technical assistance and capacity-building programs, as well as support for preparing an integrated roadmap covering mineral-resource development and related supply chains.
In an earlier meeting, Yasser Ramadan, Chairman of the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority (MRMIA), discussed with a WB delegation ways to strengthen cooperation and support efforts to develop Egypt’s mining sector, as well as mechanisms to secure the financing needed to implement several development and capacity-building projects.
