Egypt, US Push to Enhance Energy Cooperation at COP28

Within the framework of his participation in COP28, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla has held a meeting with Brad Crabtree, Assistant Secretary at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM); and Andrew Light, US Assistant Secretary of Energy for International Affairs.

The two parties highlighted the depth of relations and close cooperation between Egypt and the United States, especially in the field of energy.

During the meeting, American representatives conveyed to the minister the greetings of US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and her appreciation for the deep relations between the two sides in the field of energy and the development it has witnessed over the past years.

Meanwhile, El Molla praised the pioneering role of American energy companies operating in the Egyptian petroleum sector and the fruitful partnerships that resulted from it.

The meeting also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides in preparing regulations and laws related to carbon capture, use and storage, as well as implementing pilot projects specifically using the carbon dioxide gas that will be captured.

Moreover, the two parties tackled exchanging expertise and building capabilities through cooperation with American national laboratories specialized in the field of emissions reduction and energy transformation.

The two parties also reviewed the status of regional cooperation between the two sides within the framework of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, in which the United States participates as an observer.
