Egypt Talks Closer Partnership with TotalEnergies

Egypt and TotalEnergies discussed enhancing joint cooperation, with new investment opportunities available through the Egypt Upstream Gateway (EUG) for oil and gas exploration in offshore and onshore areas. This came during the meeting between Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Pascal Breant, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Exploration and Production in Egypt.

The meeting further reviewed regional cooperation in developing gas resources and optimizing the use of infrastructure, which contributes to supporting Egypt’s plans as a regional energy hub.

During the meeting, Badawi emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation with the company to support the Ministry’s strategy, which aims to maximize the utilization of Egypt’s oil and gas resources and attract new investments in both Egypt and Cyprus, in addition to leveraging Egypt’s infrastructure.

The Minister affirmed Egypt’s full support for TotalEnergies’ expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean and for accelerating joint regional cooperation projects in the gas sector, to achieve integration in the field of natural gas.

For his part, Breant expressed the company’s eagerness for more cooperation with Egypt, given the attractive investment environment in the oil and gas sector. He noted that the company is particularly interested in untapped discoveries and conducting studies for opportunities available in open areas.

In Egypt, TotalEnergies is a shareholder in the Idku liquified natural gas (LNG) plant (train 1). The company has interests in two offshore exploration blocks in the Mediterranean, including Block 3, which it operates.

Earlier in 2025, Eni and TotalEnergies were reported as aiming to reach a final investment decision (FID) for the Cronos gas discovery offshore Cyprus by 2026 and deliver volumes to Egypt by 2029 in a much-needed boost for the country’s offshore gas prospects.
