Egypt, Baker Hughes Explore New Tech Cooperation to Boost Output, Cut Emissions

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, on the sidelines of the Energy Intelligence Forum 2025 in London to discuss strengthening technological collaboration aimed at increasing oil and gas production and reducing carbon emissions.

The meeting reviewed potential cooperation areas, including the use of modern technologies in exploration and production, managing mature fields, and applying innovative drilling and reservoir management solutions. The discussion also covered carbon reduction and environmental performance initiatives, reflecting the sector’s commitment to sustainability.

The meeting also touched on the progress of an ongoing joint study between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Baker Hughes on underground natural gas storage. Additionally, both parties discussed expanding cooperation in capacity-building and training programs for Egypt’s petroleum and gas workforce. They further explored opportunities in renewable energy, particularly geothermal projects, as part of Egypt’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix. Badawi noted that Baker Hughes could play a key role in supporting these efforts through its technological expertise and collaboration with Egypt’s petroleum sector.

The minister added that leveraging advanced technology across exploration, production, safety, and environmental protection remains a top priority for Egypt’s petroleum sector. He praised the long-standing partnership with Baker Hughes, which has spanned more than six decades.

Egypt and Baker Hughes share a partnership spanning more than six decades, most recently reinforced by a memorandum of understanding signed in April with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) to enhance safety, environmental performance, and training under a framework for Health, Safety, Environment (HSE).
