Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, has discussed with Halliburton the preparation of technical and economic studies on opportunities to increase oil and gas production across the country, with a focus on horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
The studies will identify technically and economically viable applications based on the characteristics and production potential of each field and reservoir, to increase output, improve field economics, and reduce operating and production costs, according to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR).
Badawi made the remarks during talks with a senior Halliburton delegation led by Ahmed Helmy, the company’s Vice President for North Africa, to discuss expanding cooperation and applying Halliburton’s technologies and technical expertise to Egypt’s upstream sector.
Badawi also called for closer coordination between Halliburton and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), and South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company (Ganope) to identify priority opportunities and develop clear implementation programs.
Helmy said Halliburton has begun preparing specialized studies to identify opportunities in unconventional areas and reservoirs. The company plans to conduct a comprehensive technical and economic study across Egypt over the coming months to determine the most suitable opportunities for horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, taking into account the characteristics and production potential of individual reservoirs.
Halliburton has identified promising opportunities to increase production and improve operational performance at several companies, including Khalda Petroleum, General Petroleum Company, and Badr Petroleum, a subsidiary of Western Desert Operating Petroleum Company (WEPCO), according to Helmy.
The company is prepared to expand these applications to other operators and work directly with them to convert identified opportunities into implementation programs focused on increasing production, improving efficiency, and reducing costs.
Helmy also highlighted Halliburton’s operational flexibility and its ability to redeploy equipment, assets, and expertise across North Africa, which he said would allow the company to expand its business in Egypt and provide technical and technological support to exploration and production companies.
Helmy welcomed recent measures by MoPMR to improve the investment climate, increase production, and strengthen partnerships with international oil companies. He also pointed to positive developments regarding payments owed to foreign partners.
Halliburton is a global oilfield services company that provides products and services to the upstream oil and gas industry, including drilling, well completion, stimulation, and production optimization. In June 2026, Halliburton carried out a hydraulic fracturing job at the BAPETCO BED-15 concession in the Western Desert.
