Construction to Begin on Mažeikiai Refinery’s Modernization Project

A ceremony was held in Lithuania to mark the commencement of construction of PC ORLEN Lietuva’s new Residue Conversion Unit at Mažeikiai Refinery, the only crude oil refinery in the Baltic States.

In October 2021, Petrofac was awarded the contract with PC ORLEN Lietuva valued approximately EUR550 million (almost $640 million).The program includes environmental improvements as well as the modernization and expansion of the current refinery complex.

On-site management from Petrofac and PC ORLEN Lietuva was joined by officials from the government and municipal administrations. Guest of honor, Dainius Kreivys, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania, said:

“Poland is an important strategic partner for us in the energy sector, and ORLEN Lietuva business in Lithuania stands as an example of such successful partnerships.”

Elie Lahoud, Chief Operating Officer for Petrofac’s Engineering & Construction division said:

“The ground-breaking is a key milestone in the modernization, environmental upgrade and expansion program at the Mažeikiai Refinery. Our focus remains on safe, assured and timely delivery as we move forward in the construction phase of the new Residue Conversion Unit.
