Benban Solar Park will cover around 37 km2 of desert with solar panels in 2019, providing around 1.8 Gigawatt (GW) of electricity, the European Band for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced.
The park is set to produce 20% of the country’s electricity that will be generated from renewable resources by 2022 and at least 35% by 2030.
Benban solar park will have the largest renewable energy project in Africa and is expected to turn Upper Egypt “into a source of renewable as vital as the river nearby,” EBRD said.
