Badawi Highlights Egypt–Cyprus Cooperation as Regional Energy Integration

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, stated that Egypt is enhancing its role as a key regional hub for trading and exchanging energy, leveraging its fully integrated infrastructure.

Speaking during an Energy Talks panel discussion with Cyprus Energy Minister George Papanastasiou at ADIPEC 2025, Badawi emphasized that this arrangement enables Egypt to provide a fast, economical, and reliable route for delivering East Mediterranean gas resources to global markets at a competitive cost.

Badawi pointed out that connecting the Cypriot Cronos gas field to Egypt’s infrastructure represents the first practical step towards regional energy integration. This step follows the two commercial agreements signed in October for gas transport. Work is progressing rapidly with the Cypriot side and the field’s partners, Eni and TotalEnergies, to finalize all procedures in preparation for expediting the Final Investment Decision (FID).

The Minister also confirmed that this partnership model will pave the way for realizing the project to connect the Cypriot Aphrodite field and any future discoveries to the Egyptian infrastructure.

Egypt and Cyprus signed in October two commercial agreements for transporting natural gas from the Cypriot Cronos field to Egypt on the sidelines of the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Conference and Exhibition (EMC 2025) held in Limassol.

According to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February between the two countries, the Cronos gas, which holds an estimated 3 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of proven gas, will be delivered through a submarine pipeline, processed at Zohr’s field facilities, and then liquefied at the Damietta liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant for export to European markets.
