Wood, a UK-based consulting and engineering company, has secured a new contract to manage Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for PetroChina at the West Qurna 1 oilfield in southern Iraq.
The multi-year award deepens Wood’s long-standing involvement in one of the nation’s largest and most vital oil-producing assets.
“The West Qurna 1 field underpins the nation’s energy security and contributes significantly to its economic resilience. This contract award deepens our decade-long partnership at West Qurna 1 and reflects the continued trust placed in Wood to deliver complex energy solutions in Iraq,” said Ellis Renforth, Wood’s President of Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
The Qurna oilfield, located near Basra in southern Iraq, consists of two major fields. West Qurna-1 holds an estimated 20 billion barrels of recoverable reserves and is operated by PetroChina. Its neighboring field, West Qurna-2, has estimated reserves of 14 billion barrels and is operated by a consortium led by Lukoil.
Wood operates in over 60 countries across the oil and natural gas, energy, and power sectors. The company reported a strong year in 2024, securing a record $920 million in contracts across the Middle East. This includes projects in Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where Wood recently opened its third office in Sharjah.
