The United Energy Egypt (UEE) has drilled around 30 wells in 2025, which successfully offset natural reservoir decline and increased oil production by more than 20%, according to Kamel Al Sawi, Regional President of UEE, in an interview with PetroCast. The production surge follows a strategic expansion of the company’s footprint and the implementation of aggressive drilling schedules to maximize asset recovery.
The company’s recent acquisition of the US-based Apex company has doubled production and lifted total reserves to more than 60 million barrels (mmbl). Al Sawi noted that UEE’s investment activity in Egypt has evolved significantly since 2019, following its 100% acquisition of Kuwait Energy’s shares and five concession areas.
Currently, UEE is targeting a doubling of production within the next five years and plans to increase drilling activity in 2026, while continuing to evaluate new acquisition opportunities
In addition to upstream growth, UEE is diversifying into renewable energy as a second core business segment. The company is implementing a green hydrogen pilot project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and is pursuing the Mediterranean Green Hub initiative in cooperation with Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company and Alexandria Fertilizers Company. Under this project, United Energy will supply green hydrogen for the production of export-oriented green ammonia, aligning with the national energy transition strategy.
Al Sawi praised the investment environment and the incentive packages launched by Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. He specifically highlighted regulatory amendments that increased the flexibility of concession agreements and improvements in arrears payments as key drivers for accelerating investment.
While the oil and natural gas industry faced challenges during 2023–2024, Egypt remains focused on a national production target of 1 million barrels per day (mmbbl/d).
At the sector level, Al Sawi underscored the importance of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) expanding its international presence, noting its participation in upstream projects abroad since 2012.
He emphasized that Egyptian investments abroad serve as a vital revenue stream that complements domestic growth. By balancing traditional exploration in areas such as Wadi El Natrun with new energy initiatives, UEE aims to play a central role in Egypt’s expanding energy hub.
United Energy Egypt (UEE), established in 2021, is a subsidiary of Kuwait Energy Egypt (KEE), which has been operational since 2006. Both companies are under the umbrella of United Energy Group (UEG), the ultimate parent company. UEE has made significant strides in the energy sector through the Block 11 awarding of the oil and gas concession in the Western Desert. This marks a pivotal step in its expansion and operational footprint in Egypt.
