Qatari producer UCC Oil and Gas Holding is exploring opportunities to enter additional oil and gas fields in Venezuela, Reuters reported, citing the company’s Head of Upstream, Erik Keskula.
Speaking at a conference in Caracas, Keskula said the company is considering opportunities across Venezuela’s energy sector.
UCC, alongside British energy major bp and XRG, the energy investment arm of UAE state-owned ADNOC, was awarded a long-term license last month to develop the Loran gas project.
Located in Venezuelan waters and extending into Trinidad and Tobago, Loran is among the country’s largest offshore gas projects. The consortium is authorized to produce up to 4 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas from the field, which has estimated total reserves of 7.3 tcf.
Meanwhile, Shell received a separate license to develop the same gas field.
“We have interest in everything, really. We are looking for the right opportunities in all sectors,” Keskula said.
The potential expansion comes amid growing cooperation between Qatar and Venezuela. Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez recently discussed potential areas of cooperation with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi during a meeting in Caracas, according to Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
