TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed an agreement to construct the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) system for Oman’s Sur desalination plant, which supplies drinking water to more than 600,000 people in Sharqiyah and the Gulf region.
It will be the first solar project of its kind in the region to produce 17 megawatts peak (MWp). It produces annually over 30,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green electricity, or more than a third of the desalination plant’s daily consumption, enabling it to avoid close to 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
It is in line with Oman’s National Energy Strategy, which aims to produce 30% of its electricity by 2030 from renewable sources. In order to increase energy production, the plant will be equipped with more than 32,000 high-efficiency solar panels.
Veolia is implementing solutions to optimize the energy efficiency of its desalination activities, including the Sharqiyah Desalination plant. Together with TotalEnergies, the Group has decided to take a further step towards green transformation by using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels to power the plant.
