Supreme Council of Energy Approves the National Strategy for Low-Carbon Hydrogen

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has chaired the meeting of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Energy, which approved the National Strategy for Low-Carbon Hydrogen on February 27th.

The meeting was attended by Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy; Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development; Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, and other ministers and energy leaders.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the role of the Supreme Council of Energy in following up on the implementation of Egypt’s plan to reach the percentage of renewable energy’s contribution to the electrical energy mix to reach more than 42% by 2030.

In addition, the council plays a role in issuing approvals for the establishment of green hydrogen projects and its derivatives as well as granting them the necessary incentives to attract more investments in this vital field.

The council aims to make Egypt one of the leading countries in the low-carbon hydrogen economy in the world, by utilizing world-leading expertise and innovations in the production and export of hydrogen and its derivatives, promising renewable energy sources, and gas reserves, as well as relying on its strategic location.

The strategy is based on the gradual expansion of the local use of low-carbon hydrogen, while increasing the production capacities of hydrogen and its derivatives, leading to the use of low-carbon hydrogen in all sectors, especially industry and transportation, and increasing the market share of exports to global markets

During the meeting, Shaker reviewed the executive status of renewable energy projects, whether already under construction or future, with a total capacity of 70.75 gigawatts.
