QatarEnergy has entered into a long-term agreement with Malaysia’s state energy firm, Petronas, to supply two million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually for 20 years. The sales and purchase agreement, scheduled to begin in 2028, marks the first long-term LNG supply partnership between the two national energy giants.
The deal was finalized in Doha on the sidelines of the LNG2026 international conference. It was signed by Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, and Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of Petronas.
Under the terms of the agreement, LNG volumes will be delivered from Qatar to Malaysia to support the nation’s long-term energy security. QatarEnergy noted that the partnership reinforces Qatar’s status as a premier global supplier while highlighting the deepening cooperation between the two companies.
The agreement comes as demand for LNG continues to rise across Asia. Both firms emphasized that the deal reflects their shared focus on building long-term partnerships to navigate the global energy transition.
QatarEnergy and Malaysia’s Petronas have a history of LNG cooperation, dating back to the newly signed 20-year deal. In 2016, Qatargas, Qatar’s LNG export arm before the consolidation under QatarEnergy, signed a long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement with Petronas for more than 1.1 million tons (mmt) per year.
