The Ministry of Petroleum announced that they will install and activate 20,000 prepaid gas meters by H2 2019 in trial operations in Bashayer Al Khair 2 project in Alexandria and Al Asmarat neighborhood in Cairo, according to an official source in the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), Almal News reported.

The trial operations will expand in the social housing projects, new cities and compounds, reaching 300,000 customers in 2020/2021 and then to another 500,000 customers in 2021/2022.

The prepaid meters are expected to be the standard meter soon for any new natural gas system installation, while around 10 million standard meter will be converted gradually, the source said.

The last period witnessed several steps to initiate the widespread of prepaid gas meters with the cooperation of the Ministry of Defense and Military Production, to prepare the meters’ technical specifications.

The source added that activating the prepaid gas meters has a lot of advantages, such as limiting the reading errors, controlling and saving consumption.
