PM Holds Ministerial Meeting to Secure Electric Power Needs Next Summer

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has held a meeting with several ministers including the Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, to follow up on the efforts of providing the needs of the electricity sector to be ready for the next summer.

Madbouly stressed the importance of meeting the electricity sector’s fuel needs for next summer, ensuring readiness and preventing power outages, is one of the government’s priorities in the coming period.

The meeting reviewed the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ (MoPMR) efforts and preparations to provide sufficient reserves of natural gas in order to ensure the continued operation of power stations.

During the meeting, it was stressed that international companies are making strenuous efforts to accelerate natural gas production from their concession areas, which will provide more gas to the local market.

Additionally, it was noted that an agreement was signed between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and American company New Fortress Energy to lease a floating vessel for gasification, where liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be received, stored and returned to its gaseous state, and then pumped to the national natural gas grid to meet consumption requirements.

They also looked at the current efforts to increase the contribution of renewable energy to the electricity mix, which will be pumped into the national grid until next summer.

Moreover, they reviewed the developments of the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, as the Madbouly stressed the need to continue intensifying efforts to complete this huge project, and to adhere to the time plan in light of the directives of the political leadership, and his continuous follow-up.
