Oman Announce Plans for Second Giant Solar Project

Oman Power and Water Procurement (OPWP) have opened a bidding round for a new utility-scale one gigawatt (GW) solar power plant in Oman’s Dhahirah governorate, Trade Arabia reported.

OPWP said that the photovoltaic (PV) based project, dubbed Solar 2022 IPP, will launch commercially in four years time.

The bidding round closes on October 22, with contracts for the project set to be awarded before 2019.

OPWP aims to add 2,600 MW of renewable energy generation to its capacity by 2025, in line with the goal of a minimum of 10% of Omani power generation coming from renewables.

The Solar 2022 IPP is expected to be implemented alongside OPWP’s first commercial-scale solar project, Ibri II Solar IPP.
