An oil spill occurred in the Abu Galawa area, north of Hurghada, Egypt’s Director of Red Sea Protected Areas Directorate, Ahmed Ghallab, said, according to Egypt Independent.
The spill was first reported by local dive organizers.
The oil spill covers an area of more than 400 meters, Ghallab noted. He added that steps had been taken to contain the spill and prevent it from spreading to popular tourist spots, Amwal Al Ghad reports.
Egyptian authorities are seeking to determine the source of the spill and have taken samples from the site. The samples will be examined in laboratories in the Suez region.
The authorities have also coordinated with several oil firms to arrange helicopter overflights of the area to ensure that there are no additional oil spills.
