NREA to Establish BOO Wind Farm

NREA to Establish BOO Wind Farm

The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) will work with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) to build a wind farm, using the build, own, operate (BOO) framework, Al Mal News reports.

The wind farm’s capacity is planned to reach 220 MW.

The NREA opted for the BOO system in order to minimize financial outlays. Under a cost-sharing agreement, the NREA would been required to invest approximately EGP 4.2 billion, sources at the NREA told Al Mal News.

Environmental, feasibility, and economic studies have been conducted, but the project had been delayed due to funding issues. The NREA is currently in talks with Masdar on the final details of the project.

The NREA expects to complete three wind farms with a combined capacity of 380 MW during the first quarter of 2018, the Head of the NREA, Mohamed El Khayat, stated. The projects will include a 40 MW capacity wind farm in Gabal El Zeit, a 220 MW capacity wind farm also in Gabal el Zeit, and 120 MW wind farm in another location.

The three wind farms will boost Egypt’s renewable energy production to around 970 MW—with most of the production coming from the solar plant in Koraymat and from wind farms, Al Mal News reports.

The NREA is a government body that was established in 1986 to promote the use of renewable energy technology in Egypt.
