Iraq’s Misan Oil Company has completed the drilling of the deepest horizontal well in the Bazarkan oil field, setting three new records and marking a major milestone in Iraq’s upstream development efforts.
The well, BUCN-226H, was completed at the beginning of November and set the records for depth, horizontal length, and total displacement. It reached a total depth of 5,626 meters, with a horizontal section measuring 1,350 meters, and a total horizontal displacement of 1,809.9 meters.
The drilling was completed in a single, continuous operation using advanced Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS) and Logging While Drilling (LWD) technologies. The use of these technologies enabled real-time reservoir evaluation, ensuring optimal well control throughout the process.
Hussein Kadhem Laibi, Director General of Misan Oil Company, confirmed that this achievement is part of the company’s strategy to develop its fields using cutting-edge global technologies to boost production and improve reservoir recovery. Laibi added that the successful operation highlights the company’s growing technical capabilities and its role as a national leader in executing complex engineering projects.
Misan Oil Company is a state-owned enterprise under Iraq’s Ministry of Oil, responsible for developing and managing oil fields in Misan province, including Bazarkan, Faqa, and Abu Gharab, to boost national crude production.
