Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned natural gas company, has set a record for gas deliveries to China as demand continues to rise.

Gazprom on Saturday announced that its deliveries to China via the Power of Siberia 1 route had reached an all-time high, surpassing the contractual obligations set by Chinese National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC).

According to Bloomberg, CNPC had requested volumes that exceeded Gazprom’s contractual obligations on November 23.

Gazprom was able to supply all the requested volumes, setting a new record for daily gas supplies to China.

Last month, Gazprom and CNPC signed an addendum to their contract for gas supplies via the Power of Siberia 1, which will allow for additional deliveries through 2023. However, no further details were provided about the agreement.

It is worth noting that Russia aims to export 30 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to China next year, with the goal of eventually increasing the flows to 38 bcm per year. Additionally, separate shipments via a future Far Eastern route are expected to reach an additional 10 bcm per year.

Furthermore, Gazprom is currently in talks with China to supply up to 50 bcm per year via the future Power of Siberia 2 link. However, no contract has been signed yet.

Gazprom also indicates that its pipeline gas flows to China will match its historical shipments to Western Europe, which have declined in recent years due to European countries seeking to diversify their energy imports following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In 2020, the company sold approximately 120 bcm of gas to Western Europe, highlighting the potential for even greater gas exports to China in the future.
