The Chairman of the Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO) Yasser Salah El Din stated that the company is working on several strategic pillars of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), especially in meeting the gas needs of the local market and the country’s economic sectors.
He elaborated that the company transported 64 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas during 2024.
This came during the general assembly meeting of the company chaired by the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi to discuss and approve its annual results of 2024.
Salah El Din added that the electricity sector had the largest share of the transported gas, representing 56% of the total quantities transported. He also indicated to the crucial role of the National Gas Control Center in operating and monitoring the grid.
In the field of developing the national grid infrastructure, the Chairman explained that GASCO is working to expedite the implementation of the necessary pipelines to add new gas entry and receipt points to the grid from the new gasification ships that will operate during the summer in Al-Sokhna region.
Additionally, he explained the latest efforts of GASCO to add more pipelines and implementing several strategic projects to support the national grid capacities, noting that total length of the main lines of the national grid reached 8,200 km by the end of 2024, with a transmission capacity of 262 million cubic meters per day (mmcm/d). Moreover, Salah El Din mentioned the significant role of the PIMCOE.
He highlighted that 1.9 million tons of petroleum products were produced, during 2024, to meet the needs of petrochemical plants, and increase production of butane and condensates, noting that the project of increasing the production capacity of Western Desert Gas Complex is being completed and it is expected to be opened during Q4 of 2025.
Meanwhile, Salah El Din emphasized that GASCO is preparing to sign a cooperation protocol with the Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority (SCZone) to study the establishment of a corridor for transporting green ammonia and storage facilities at Sokhna Port.
The Chairman reviewed the developments of other projects including Dahshour compressor stations expansion, hydrogen transportation, carbon capture storage (CCS), building capacities, digital transformation and using ERP program, health, safety and environment, social responsibility, and energy efficiency.
During the meeting, Badawi stressed the importance of the national grid. He also reviewed the preparations for establishing the needed infrastructure in the grid to accommodate and receive quantities of natural gas. The Minister also directed the rapid and effective coordination with the various authorities to ensure the protection and security of the national grid.
