Badr Abdelatty, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, has met with Aloke Lohia, CEO and Founder of Indorama Ventures, a Thai-headquartered global chemical company petrochemical and fertilizers company, to discuss plans to expand the group’s investments and activities in the Egyptian market.
Abdelatty praised the company’s investments in Egypt and its role in strengthening Egyptian-Thai economic cooperation, expressing interest in building on its presence to attract further investments and expand its operations.
The meeting addressed the company’s expansion plans and priorities in Egypt, as well as means to support their implementation and create favorable conditions for future projects.
Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s interest in increasing the company’s production capacity or introducing higher-value-added products to meet the needs of Egyptian industries, enhance the competitiveness of locally manufactured products, and boost exports. He also highlighted opportunities to expand partnerships with Egyptian counterparts in manufacturing and training.
The minister affirmed the Egyptian government’s readiness to provide the necessary support and encouraged the company to explore the advantages, services, and incentives offered by Egypt’s ports and logistics zones.
Indorama entered Egypt in 2018 in the chemicals and plastics business. Since then, it has broadened its industrial footprint in the country and is currently cooperating with Misr Phosphate Company to establish a phosphate fertilizer plant in the Ain Sokhna area, which will produce 300,000 tons per year (t/y) each of phosphoric acid, and diammonium phosphate (DAP), and triple superphosphate (TSP) fertilizers.
During the Egypt Mining Forum, Mukul Agrawal, Chairman of Indorama Misr Fertilizers, highlighted the projects’ status. “Misr Phosphate is one of the largest producers of phosphate rocks in Egypt. We discussed together our collaboration to add value to the phosphate rocks, and instead of exporting phosphate rocks, now we are planning to work together and produce fertilizers as value-added products for export,” said Agrawal.
He noted that construction of the project will start in the last quarter of this year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028 and the beginning of 2029.
