Eni has completed the Bouri Gas Utilization Project offshore Libya, with start-up procedures underway to recover previously flared associated natural gas and supply an additional 700 million standard cubic meters (mmcm/d) annually to the domestic market, the Italian energy company announced on October 19.

The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.5 million metric tons (mmt) of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

Recovered natural gas will support domestic electricity generation, while surplus volumes could be exported to Europe through the Greenstream pipeline linking Libya and Italy.

The development was undertaken by Mellitah Oil and Gas, a joint venture between Eni and Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC).

It involved installing a new Gas Recovery Module (GRM) at the offshore Bouri field and connecting the associated infrastructure to capture and process natural gas that was previously flared.

The project is also designed to improve the utilization of Libya’s offshore natural gas resources and increase the efficiency of existing production infrastructure.

Eni said the development forms part of broader efforts to expand natural gas supplies while reducing emissions from upstream operations.

Other developments underway in Libya include the Structures A&E project, which aims to bring additional offshore natural gas resources into production for domestic consumption and exports, alongside upgrades to production and transportation infrastructure.

The Bouri project supports Libya’s wider effort to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030. In May 2026, the NOC reported that Mellitah Oil and Gas had installed major gas utilization equipment at the Bouri field, designed to handle production from its two platforms estimated at 120 million cubic feet (mmcf) per day, according to the NOC.
